The demand and consumption of bandwidth has increased tremendously over the last decade, the pressure to provide bandwidth with high speed and capacity to homeowners and businesses has intensified.
However, that is where Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) comes in. GPON is an access method that is used to provide fiber connectivity using point to multi-point technology.
Its main feature is the use of passive splitters in the fiber network which allows a single fiber line to deliver connectivity to multiple households or businesses.
Unlike Ethernet network that uses physical electrical switches that close and open to send signals, GPON does not rely on electrical switches, instead the optical splitters are used to separate fiber signals. Power is only needed at the initial transmission stage as well as at the final reception point of the signal.
